Technical Advisor:

Current mechanical heart valves are affected by complications associated with thrombosis. Thrombosis is the growth of blood clots during a steady flow state. As a result, patients are placed on anticoagulation medication to reduce the occurrence of blood clots. Therefore, our new innovation, a monoleaflet mechanical heart valve, will aid in reducing the occurrence of thrombosis by improving the hemodynamic performance and regurgitation. Our project obtains these results through computational modeling (SolidWorks), 3D prototyping, and experimental validation. All of our research was obtained by in-lab testing with a mock circulatory loop test (MCL) and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) software. These tests may not fully capture the in-vivo (inside the body) conditions.
